What the Data Reveals About EHS Performance
Organizations are making progress, but there are still significant gaps in how EHS performance is managed and measured.
- 60% of companies track and report EHS data, yet 40% report doing nothing at all
- 62% of organizations are operating at or near the lowest levels of EHS maturity
- While 57% collect and analyze EHS data, 43% are not using analytics to improve performance
The data shows a clear disconnect. Many organizations recognize the importance of EHS, but lack the systems, processes or visibility needed to act on it effectively.
At the same time, compliance remains the primary driver. 62% of organizations said regulatory requirements are the top reason for tracking EHS metrics, ahead of broader goals like risk reduction or performance improvement.
The takeaway is clear. Measuring EHS performance is no longer enough. The real value comes from how that data is used to drive decisions and improvement.
Where Organizations Are Falling Behind
Despite growing investment in EHS and ESG, many organizations are still limited by outdated systems and fragmented approaches.
- 29% still rely on manual processes or spreadsheets
- 27% use multiple, non-integrated systems that limit visibility
- Only 5% have fully consolidated their EHS processes into a single system
These gaps make it difficult to collect reliable data, track performance consistently or identify risks before incidents occur.
Data quality is another major challenge, especially as ESG reporting becomes more critical. Organizations are under pressure to provide accurate, auditable data, but many lack the infrastructure to support it.
Even in areas where progress is being made, there are blind spots. For example:
- 88% track incident and injury metrics, but
- Only 26% measure mental health and wellbeing
This imbalance highlights a broader issue. Many programs are still focused on what’s easy to measure rather than what drives long-term performance and workforce wellbeing.
How Leading Organizations Are Moving Forward
The most mature organizations are shifting from reactive compliance to proactive, data-driven EHS strategies. They are investing in:
- Integrated systems that provide a single source of truth for EHS and ESG data
- Advanced analytics and dashboards to uncover trends and predict risk
- Mobile tools that make it easier for frontline workers to capture data in real time
- Balanced KPIs, combining leading and lagging indicators to improve decision-making
The impact is significant. Organizations with more mature processes are more agile, more resilient and better equipped to prevent incidents before they happen. There is also a clear link between digital adoption and performance. Companies that leverage analytics and business intelligence gain deeper insights, improve visibility and make faster, more informed decisions.
What Sets Mature EHS Programs Apart
Organizations with higher levels of EHS maturity operate differently. They don’t just measure performance, but they use data to continuously improve it. More mature programs are characterized by:
- Structured, proactive risk management approaches rather than reactive incident response
- Greater agility and resilience, especially in complex or changing environments
- Integration of EHS into daily operations, rather than treating it as a separate function
- Balanced use of leading and lagging indicators, giving both hindsight and predictive insight
The survey also highlights a clear relationship between maturity and data capabilities. Organizations with more advanced analytics and reporting tools are better equipped to identify trends, uncover root causes and take preventative action.
However, many companies are not yet leveraging these capabilities effectively.
