At a Glance

Moffatt & Nichol’s teams work in complex, high-risk environments. With field staff working underwater, at height, and in dynamic coastal environments, incident visibility and timely reporting are operationally essential.

Despite this high-risk profile, Moffatt & Nichol lacked a consistent, structured way to report incidents. Without a reliable system, it was challenging to see trends or respond quickly to injuries.

Moffatt & Nichol implemented Evotix to centralize incident reporting and investigations, enable mobile reporting for field teams and strengthen visibility across global offices. Evotix now supports consistent tracking, earlier reporting, multilingual access and alignment with ISO 14001 and future ISO 45001 initiatives.

Founded in 1945 just after World War II, Moffatt & Nichol is a global engineering, design and infrastructure firm known for its work in ports, harbors, shipyards, waterways, bridges and coastal systems. With more than 40 offices worldwide, their teams support projects for clients such as the U.S. Navy and international maritime organizations.

Designing the coastal infrastructure that connects ports, waterways and communities around the world

Moffatt & Nichol’s work lives at the intersection of coasts, commerce and communities. From ports and marine terminals to bridges, waterways and coastal resilience projects, the company helps clients design infrastructure that stands up to harsh marine environments and evolving climate pressures.

That mission is impossible without a strong health and safety program. Their employees work in high-risk environments:

Maintaining timely awareness of incidents, hazards and near misses is essential in these environments, where early intervention can prevent injury escalation or recurring risk.

We have inspectors doing work high above rivers on bridges and commercial divers doing work in the depths of the ocean. So we have a pretty significant risk profile at Moffatt & Nichol.

Keith RobinsonCSP, CHMM Director of Occupational Health & Safety

In early 2022, Moffatt & Nichol hired Keith Robinson as Corporate Director of Occupational Health and Safety. Keith was the company’s first senior leader dedicated solely to health and safety. Drawing on his 35+ years of experience, Keith set out to build a modern incident management program.

Keith’s mandate is to make sure every employee—from divers and rope-access technicians to office-based engineers—understands their risk profile and has the systems, tools and support needed to go home safely each day.

My job is to make sure that in the end, we have the programs and systems in place so people can go home
at night to their families. If I’ve done that, I’ve done a good job.

High-risk field work without a
consistent system

Before adopting Evotix, Moffatt & Nichol lacked a centralized way to report, track or investigate incidents. Reporting varied widely by office and discipline, and many incidents weren’t captured because the process felt cumbersome or unclear.

This created several gaps:

1.

Divers, rope-access inspectors, environmental teams and engineers all operated in different environments without a consolidated view of incident trends.

2.

Divers, rope-access inspectors, environmental teams and engineers all operated in different environments without a consolidated view of incident trends.

3.

Without a structured platform, insights from one project rarely reached other offices or divisions.

4.

Divers, rope-access inspectors, environmental Without mobile accessibility, many employees found it difficult to report promptly. teams and engineers all operated in different environments without a consolidated view of incident trends.

In a high-risk business like Moffatt & Nichol’s, these gaps are very concerning. But Keith was the right person for the job.

Prior to implementing Evotix, there wasn’t a reliable way to track incidents or encourage reporting. It was a manual
process and the resulting reports were hit or miss.

Excellence in EHS compliance
and culture

Drawing on his 35 years in safety, Keith knew that a strong incident management system was non-negotiable for Moffatt & Nichol. The main goals of the transformation were to:

Faster reporting and global reach

Implementing Evotix replaced manual systems with one connected platform accessible to employees whether they’re in office, underwater or on a bridge.
The Evotix solution delivers:
Employees see virtually the same interface whether they’re
on mobile or desktop, which reduces cognitive load and training effort.
Divers, rope-access technicians and site teams can submit
reports directly from their phones, enabling early awareness and faster treatment—critical for minimizing injury severity.
The team can track investigations, assign corrective actions
and follow them through to completion inside the system, instead of relying on memory or scattered spreadsheets.
With language modules for Latin America, Brazil, Spain and other regions, Evotix feels like a native tool. Global teams can see incident reporting data in their language,
understand it and build in what they need for their jurisdiction.

We have long-standing relationships with Evotix team members. It’s reassuring knowing that I can reach out to half a dozen people on the Evotix team and get my questions answered right away.

Better data, thoughtful decisions and safer work

The impact of Moffatt & Nichol’s new approach shows up on multiple levels throughout the organization.

Fewer injuries and broader reporting

Since Evotix was introduced as part of a broader safety program, Moffatt & Nichol has reduced injuries that impact employees by over two thirds.

At the same time, the company has dramatically expanded the types of events it tracks including:

Where previously there wasn’t a good way to track or encourage people to report, the mobile app now makes it easy for employees to report. With all incidents in one place, the team can now:

Shifting culture and ownership

Moffatt & Nichol’s culture is changing. Evotix plays a pivotal role in that by giving employees a tangible way to contribute. When employees report hazards, near misses or good catches, they see themselves as adding tangible value to the organization.

The system helps break the mindset that safety is just the safety manager’s job. It shows employees they have a voice, and their input can actually make the whole company stronger and every employee safer.

A commitment to global
health and safety

Moffatt & Nichol is committed to strengthening its global health, safety and environmental framework by:

Pursuing ISO 45001 beginning in the UK
Expanding ISO-aligned practices across more regions
Building a global library of written programs and safe work practices
Connecting procedures directly to hazard and risk assessments through Evotix

Evotix will continue to support Moffatt & Nichol’s ability to standardize practices, track performance and ensure consistent processes across jurisdictions.
