At a Glance

Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited (PLNL) operates an ammonia production facility where process safety is critical. Safety and operational workflows were manual and the team relied on spreadsheets and word documents. There was no centralized location for auditing records, tracking approvals or ensuring corrective actions were completed.
Point Lisas Nitrogen implemented Evotix as a centralized platform for managing safety and operational risk. The system brings permits, incidents, management of change, audits and action tracking into one system, with configurable workflows, automated notifications and mobile access. Since implementation, the team has processed over 16,000 permits, nearly 300 MOCs, close to 200 incidents and more than 2,000 action items.

About Point Lisas Nitrogen

Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited  is located in Point Lisas, Trinidad and Tobago. The facility was built in 1998 and produces ammonia used primarily in fertilizer production. The company operates one site comprising the main ammonia plant, utilities, storage, buildings and a marine terminal for product shipping.

Protecting people while producing ammonia the world depends on

Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited manufactures ammonia in a demanding industrial environment where process safety and operational discipline are inseparable. The facility operates continuously, producing ammonia that supports fertilizer manufacturing and agricultural supply chains worldwide.

The company’s work carries significant risk. Employees and contractors work around pressurized gas systems, high temperatures and equipment that requires constant monitoring. Process safety risks include fire, explosion and loss of containment. Occupational risks include falls from heights, burns and line-of-fire injuries.

Although PLNL has a dedicated health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) department, the philosophy is that safety is a line function and everyone’s responsibility. That philosophy depends on systems that make it easy for people to see what work is happening, report issues early and ensure corrective actions are completed quickly.

A safety program outgrowing its manual processes

Before implementing Evotix, Point Lisas Nitrogen managed safety and operational work through largely manual processes. This approach supported day-to-day activity, but as the facility ages, it became harder to maintain clear visibility and consistent follow-through.

Safety records were spread across spreadsheets, documents and shared folders. Action items, incidents and audit findings lived in different places, making version control difficult and requiring manual effort to confirm whether work had been completed and approved.

Permit to work processes faced similar limitations. Permits were managed through hard-copy books and later PDF templates, which reduced visibility once work was underway. During planned turnarounds, when contractor numbers increased to as many as 500 people, teams struggled to quickly identify which permits were still active and which jobs were complete.

Auditing added further effort. Without a single system, records had to be gathered from multiple sources, making it time-consuming to verify compliance, review historical activity or prepare reports for leadership and regulators.

Before Evotix, we had a lot of manual processes. We tracked action items via spreadsheets and incidents via word documents.

A connected system built around how safety work is done

Point Lisas Nitrogen began searching for a software platform that could centralize safety management without forcing the organization to abandon workflows that already worked. The team went through a formal tender process, shortlisting companies while referencing the Verdantix Green Quadrant Report.

The company wanted a system that could be modified to fit its existing processes rather than an off-the-shelf solution that would require operational changes. Key requirements included:

  • Easy creation, submittal, review and approval of records
  • Automated notifications, reminders and reports
  • User-friendly dashboards and data analysis tools
  • All required modules in one platform to avoid logging into multiple systems

Evotix stood out for its ability to deliver a configurable, all-in-one solution at a justifiable cost. Implementation focused on aligning workflows across the organization with input from operations, maintenance, engineering and HSSE to ensure adoption and trust from day one.

Evotix is great software. It’s easy to configure and easy to use.

Clearer workflows and accountability across operations

Point Lisas Nitrogen now manages safety and operational work from a single system. Permits, incidents, management of change and action items are visible in one place giving leaders and teams a clearer view of what work is underway and what is open or close. Since implementing Evotix, Point Lisas Nitrogen has seen numerous improvements including:

More complete reporting

After implementation, reported incident counts increased. This was not driven by higher risk on site, but by a reporting process that became easier to use. Incidents that may not have been documented before are now captured, investigated and addressed.

Because records live in one system, the team can generate reports for monthly reviews and management discussions without pulling information from multiple sources. Data is consistently categorized and accessible to those who need it, supporting clearer conversations about what is happening on site.

Greater control during high-risk periods

Evotix was first put to the test during a planned turnaround in 2024, just weeks after launch. During that period, operations teams were able to see all open permits at the end of each day. This visibility prompted timely conversations about whether work was complete, whether equipment had been properly de-isolated and whether housekeeping requirements had been met.

Permit creation and approvals are now faster, and permits can be categorized and prioritized so critical work is addressed early. Permits are automatically suspended if valid times are exceeded, reducing reliance on manual checks during busy periods.

Clear ownership and follow-through

Action items are no longer hidden in spreadsheets or emails. Ownership and status are visible across departments, and records cannot be closed unless actions are completed and approved. Dashboards and weekly reports make it easier to see where follow-through is needed and reduce the risk of tasks being forgotten.

While the team continues to develop more advanced dashboards and reporting, action tracking has already improved significantly, helping prevent repeat issues and close the loop more reliably.

Less manual coordination, more predictable workflows

Automated notifications alert users to pending approvals and status changes at each stage of a workflow. This reduces the need for manual follow-up and helps records move through the system in a more predictable way.

Mobile accessibility

Employees can access Evotix from smartphones and tablets, allowing reporting and review to happen in the field rather than being delayed until someone returns to an office. This supports earlier awareness and keeps safety and operational records closer to the work itself.

Why Evotix?

Evotix provided Point Lisas Nitrogen with a system that frontline teams would use and leadership could rely on. The platform combines mobile reporting, centralized data and flexible reporting to support safety, compliance and operational decision-making.
To date, Evotix has helped Point Lisas Nitrogen:

What I found exceptional at Evotix was the people. The implementation team was a pleasure to work with.

What’s Ahead?

Point Lisas Nitrogen continues to refine how it uses the Evotix platform. Near-term priorities include further development of dashboards and reports to support advanced data analysis and trend identification.

The team is also exploring simultaneous operations mapping to maintain awareness of all open permits and work locations on any given day. Future plans may include adding modules for contractor management and document management as the organization’s needs evolve.

For Point Lisas Nitrogen, safety and operational discipline are not separate functions. The company’s commitment to responsible ammonia manufacturing depends on systems that make it easy to do the right thing, surface risk early and close the loop on every corrective action. Evotix supports that commitment by giving the organization a platform that works the way its people work.
